SummaryDiphyllobothriosis is a fish-borne parasitic zoonosis caused by so-called broad tapeworms or fish tapeworms of different genera of the order Diphyllobothriidea. (Roberts and Janovy, 2000 Vergeer, 1932) Contributors. The parasite can be avoided by thoroughly cooking fish and taking care when working with fish flesh. latum is a pseudophyllid cestode that infects fish and mammals. A severe broad tapeworm infection in humans is known to cause anemia due to the lack of vitamin B-12, which the tapeworm absorbs through the lining of the gut. The principal species causing diphyllobothriasis is Diphyllobothrium latum, known as the broad or fish tapeworm, or broad fish tapeworm. This was the only bear I saw with a tapeworm last summer.Diphyllobothrium is a genus of tapeworms which can cause diphyllobothriasis in humans through consumption of raw or undercooked fish. This will slightly stress the bear, but generally it is not advantageous for the parasite to kill the host, since that would also result in the death of the parasite. The physical effect of bears harbouring tapeworm parasites is insignificant to the bear’s health. Grizzly bears can become infected by the tapeworm from eating raw salmon. As this photo shows it can sometimes be seen trailing behind them. As can be seen toward the end of summer and into fall, bears sometimes shed a type of tapeworm, commonly called the broad fish tapeworm. No we were not in danger, as this seemed to be this family’s routine over a two-week period and they had become accustomed to the ritual. I pulled the skiff to opposite side of the river to allow them to pass about fifteen meters (yards) away. Going up river in our skiff with four guests we met the bears coming down. This was a close encounter with a mother grizzly and two cubs on Knight Inlet’s Glendale River.
